Champions League Quarter Finals 1st leg Recap (2025/26)

Full Results (Quarter Finals 1st leg) Real Madrid 1—2 Bayern  Sporting CP 0—1 Arsenal  Barcelona 0—2 Atletico Madrid PSG 2—0 Liverpool Game of the Matchday Real Madrid 1 –2 Bayern Since the final whistle at the Bernabeu, fans have hailed this tie as a "refreshing" exception from the recent norm. In an era where modern football, particularly in England, is often criticized for being too robotic and over-coached, this match felt like a throwback to the "classic" era, defined by a relentless, end-to-end rhythm. While Bayern appeared to be in the driver's seat, the numbers suggests a much tighter contest. The Bavarians were certainly guilty of wastefulness, with Luis Diaz and Dayot Upamecano spurning massive opportunities, but Real Madrid ensured Manuel Neuer remained the busiest man on the pitch. Bayern finally broke the deadlock and silenced the Madridistas in the 41st minute via Diaz, before Harry Kane doubled the lead just seconds...

Game of the Matchday

Liverpool 4–2 Bournemouth

The Premier League returned with a bang as the first match of the 2025/26 season was a rollercoaster goal-fest at Anfield. Hugo Ekitike opened the scoring with a debut goal, before setting up Cody Gakpo soon after half-time. Antoine Semenyo fought back with 2 goals under 15 minutes. However, that was not all as Liverpool produced another magical night at Anfield as late goals from Federico Chiesa and Mohamed Salah made sure they started their season with a win. A midnight thriller that had us Indian fans wide awake and emotionally invested right till the end.

Biggest Surprise

Sunderland 3–0 West Ham

Newly promoted Sunderland made a statement in their first match back in the top-flight. The Stadium of Light served as a metaphor of sorts for the home fans as their team produced a result that is full of light. West Ham were beaten 3-0 leaving both the home & away fans shocked.

Best Team Performance

Manchester City 4–0 Wolves

Manchester City started their season in dominating fashion. Pep Guardiola handed out multiple debuts and all of them impressed. Two of them (Reijnders and Cherki) even scored while Haaland did what Haaland does. A deserved victory for the Sky Blues as they accumulated a dominating 2.47xG as compared to Wolves' 0.56xG. For the Indian Cityzens, this was the perfect dessert after their dinner.

Player of the Matchday

Tijjani Reijnders (Manchester City)

On his debut, Tijjani Reijnders was everywhere - engine, creator and goal-scorer. He was involved in all but one of his teams goals. Reijnders did everything from controlling the midfield, dribbling around the opponents, threading dangerous passes, making threating runs and, of course, finishing counter-attacks.

Moment of the Matchday

Federico Chiesa's 88′ minute screamer for Liverpool

It took a while, but Federico Chiesa finally scored his first PL goal, and what a time to do it. Arne Slot's substitution of Chiesa for Wirtz proved a masterstroke. He needed someone to step up after Liverpool lost Diogo Jota in a devastating manner while also transferring out Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez. This goal could prove to kick-start his Liverpool career at last.

The Hugo Ekitike derby. There was no shortage of subplots in this game and even without them, this game would have still lived up to the billing. But all that context made it inevitable for this section. When it looked like Newcastle would open the scoring, Ryan Gravenberch shot from distance and gave the Reds a valuable 1 goal lead out of nowhere. A former Evertonian in Anthony Gordon getting sent off against Liverpool set the stage. The contest looked over just after half-time when Liverpool made it 2-0 against the 10 men of Newcastle. But St. James' Park made up for Anthony Gordon, and the players respo...

Club Brugge kept slicing Barcelona open with simple balls in behind and Carlos Forbs was unstoppable every time he got room to run, creating the first goal and scoring the second with a brilliant breakaway finish. Barcelona though, kept answering through Ferran Torres and later through Lamine Yamal, whose amazing run that equalised was the kind of moment that completely shifts the energy of a game. Eric Garcia even hit the crossbar...
