Game of the Matchday
Newcastle United 2–3 Liverpool
The Aleksander Isak derby. The Hugo Ekitike derby. There was no shortage of subplots in this game and even without them, this game would have still lived up to the billing. But all that context made it inevitable for this section. When it looked like Newcastle would open the scoring, Ryan Gravenberch shot from distance and gave the Reds a valuable 1 goal lead out of nowhere. A former Evertonian in Anthony Gordon getting sent off against Liverpool set the stage. The contest looked over just after half-time when Liverpool made it 2-0 against the 10 men of Newcastle. But St. James' Park made up for Anthony Gordon, and the players responded in stunning fashion as they fought back with a goal and then equalised late on. However, the brave display did not end well for Newcastle as their much-deserved point ultimately slipped out of their hands in the final moments.
Biggest Surprise
Brentford 1–0 Aston Villa
Considering Manchester City having won only 4 of their last 10 Premier League home matches against Tottenham, Brentford beating Aston Villa stood out as a surprise. A team that lost Champions League qualification just because of goal difference, in all honesty, should not be getting beaten by a team that lost their talisman, their captain, their manager, a significant number of their key support staff and probably their clinical striker. But that is indeed what happened and that is exactly why we all love this unpredictable sport.
Best Team Performance
Arsenal 5–0 Leeds United
On another day, I think I could have been writing about Newcastle United in this section. That would be quite rare to see, a losing team getting the best performance tag, but its hard to achieve that when another team puts up a scoreline about as perfect as it gets. Arsenal put 5 past Leeds while keeping a clean sheet to kick off their home season with a bang. There were multiple outstanding performances, especially from their backline and their attackers. However, one man stood out.
Player of the Matchday
Jurrien Timber (Arsenal)
If a team has won 5-0, you wouldn't be wrong to assume the attackers or even their attacking midfielders did most of the damage. Yet, for Arsenal, it was their right-back who registered a hat-trick of goal involvements with 2 goals and an assist. Jurrien Timber proved to be the star of the show in Arsenal's first home game of the 2025/26 season.
Honorable mentions - Joao Pedro (Chelsea), Jordan Pickford (Everton)

The timing couldn’t have been more symbolic, especially for Indian Liverpool fans. While millions welcomed Lord Ganesha, the God of new beginnings, into their homes, 16-year-old Rio Ngumoha carved out his own fresh chapter with a dramatic late winner against Newcastle.
