Champions League Quarter Finals 1st leg Recap (2025/26)

Full Results (Quarter Finals 1st leg) Real Madrid 1—2 Bayern  Sporting CP 0—1 Arsenal  Barcelona 0—2 Atletico Madrid PSG 2—0 Liverpool Game of the Matchday Real Madrid 1 –2 Bayern Since the final whistle at the Bernabeu, fans have hailed this tie as a "refreshing" exception from the recent norm. In an era where modern football, particularly in England, is often criticized for being too robotic and over-coached, this match felt like a throwback to the "classic" era, defined by a relentless, end-to-end rhythm. While Bayern appeared to be in the driver's seat, the numbers suggests a much tighter contest. The Bavarians were certainly guilty of wastefulness, with Luis Diaz and Dayot Upamecano spurning massive opportunities, but Real Madrid ensured Manuel Neuer remained the busiest man on the pitch. Bayern finally broke the deadlock and silenced the Madridistas in the 41st minute via Diaz, before Harry Kane doubled the lead just seconds...

Game of the Matchday

Brentford 2–2 Wolves

There was a clear standout this Matchday, and it took place at the Gtech Community Stadium. Brentford began the game in an expected dominating fashion with goals from Michael Kayode and Igor Thiago before 40 minutes were gone.  However just before the break, Adam Armstrong pulled one back for Wolves, inspiring the visitors. Brentford could not manage to have a shot on target in the 2nd half and got punished. Tolu Arokodare equalised the game as Wolves showed incredible resilience to fight back from two goals down against a Brentford side that looked to be cruising. What's even interesting is that both sides will look at this result and will take it as 2 points lost rather than 1 gained. Both teams hit the woodwork, the Bees in the 1st half and the visitors twice in the 2nd half from both their goal-scorers. Wolves are not going down without a fight, which unfortunately for them arrived too late in the season.

Biggest Surprise

West Ham 1–1 Manchester City

After dropping points at home against Nottingham Forest and losing convincingly away at the Bernabeu to Real Madrid, hardly anyone expected Manchester City to claim anything but the three points at the London Stadium, especially with the title slipping away from their grasp. West Ham produced a disciplined defensive performance that completely negated City’s creative engines for long periods. The Hammers fell behind to a Bernardo Silva goal that looped in strangely, but they responded almost immediately through a Konstantinos Mavropanos header from a corner. That goal was West Ham's one and only shot in the entire game but that proved costly for the Cityzens. City dominated the ball with 72% possession but lacked their usual clinical edge in the final third. Erling Haaland was kept quiet against his favourite opposition that blocked everything thrown their way in the closing stages. These two dropped points means the Premier League is firmly Arsenal's to lose.

Best Team Performance

Chelsea 0–1 Newcastle

Following one of their most important wins of the season away at Villa Park, Chelsea fumbled it at home at home against Newcastle United as the Magpies delivered a defensive masterclass at Stamford Bridge to secure their first win at the ground since 2012. Even though Chelsea took 22 shots, only 3 of them were on target as they found no way through Newcastle that looked completely unbreakable. Anthony Gordon provided the decisive blow early on in the 18th minute, finishing a chance set up selflessly by Joe Willock. Newcastle were efficient with their opportunities, hitting the target with all but two of their 7 shots and staying remarkably disciplined as Chelsea threw everything forward. It was a performance built on grit and tactical organization that effectively halted Chelsea's momentum in the race for the top four. This win could prove important for Eddie Howe’s side if they are to make a late charge for European football next season.

Player of the Matchday

Bruno Fernandes (Manchester United)

Ever since Bruno Fernandes has been given an attacking role by Michael Carrick, he is playing on a level above everyone else in the entire league. Bruno was once again the undisputed star of the weekend after another masterclass in the middle of the park against Aston Villa. The Manchester United captain provided two assists, taking his season tally to 16 and breaking David Beckham’s club record for the most assists in a single Premier League campaign. The rate with which he creates chances for others is astonishing. Like always, he was at the heart of everything good that United did, creating six chances and constantly picking apart the Villa defense with his vision. Beyond the numbers, his leadership on the pitch was vital in keeping United composed after Ross Barkley had briefly leveled for the visitors. He is now just four assists away from equaling the all-time league record held by Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne. He has 8 games left to do that.

Honorable mentions - Malick Thiaw (Newcastle), Konstantinos Mavropanos (West Ham) & Max Dowman (Arsenal)

Moment of the Matchday

Max Dowman becomes the youngest Premier League goal-scorer and saves Arsenal

Watch Dowman's goal here

History was made at the Emirates as 16-year-old Max Dowman became the youngest goalscorer in Premier League history. Coming off the bench with the game locked in a stalemate against a stubborn Everton side, the academy graduate completely transformed the dynamic of the match. He played a vital role in the breakthrough, whipping in a deadly cross that Piero Hincapie guided toward Viktor Gyokeres for the opener. Dowman then capped off an already impactful debut and turned it into a dream performance with a sensational goal of his own in the seventh minute of stoppage time. After Jordan Pickford went forward for a late corner, Arsenal broke at pace and Dowman showed incredible composure to go on a solo run, skipping past a few desperate challenges before finishing into an empty net. At just 16 years and 73 days old, he shattered the record held by James Vaughan since 2005. This was his first league appearance since August, and the image of the teenager sprinting toward the North Bank to celebrate is one that will define Arsenal’s season. Most of us can only wonder what we were doing at sixteen, but it certainly wasn't announcing ourselves to the world on a Premier League pitch!

However, that was not all as Liverpool produced another magical night at Anfield as late goals from Federico Chiesa and Mohamed Salah made sure they started their season with a win. The Hugo Ekitike derby. There was no shortage of subplots in this game and even without them, this game would have still lived up to the billing. But all that context made it inevitable for this section. When it looked like Newcastle would open the scoring, Ryan Gravenberch shot from distance and gave the Reds a valuable 1 goal lead out of nowhere. A former Evertonian in Anthony Gordon getting sent off against Liverpool set the stage. The contest looked over just after half-time when Liverpool made it 2-0 against the 10 men of Newcastle. Club Brugge kept slicing Barcelona open with simple balls in behind and Carlos Forbs was unstoppable every time he got room to run, creating the first goal and scoring the second with a brilliant breakaway finish. Barcelona though, kept answering through Ferran Torres and later through Lamine Yamal, whose amazing run that equalised was the kind of moment that completely shifts the energy of a game. Eric Garcia even hit the crossbar...
