Champions League Quarter Finals 1st leg Recap (2025/26)

Full Results (Quarter Finals 1st leg) Real Madrid 1—2 Bayern  Sporting CP 0—1 Arsenal  Barcelona 0—2 Atletico Madrid PSG 2—0 Liverpool Game of the Matchday Real Madrid 1 –2 Bayern Since the final whistle at the Bernabeu, fans have hailed this tie as a "refreshing" exception from the recent norm. In an era where modern football, particularly in England, is often criticized for being too robotic and over-coached, this match felt like a throwback to the "classic" era, defined by a relentless, end-to-end rhythm. While Bayern appeared to be in the driver's seat, the numbers suggests a much tighter contest. The Bavarians were certainly guilty of wastefulness, with Luis Diaz and Dayot Upamecano spurning massive opportunities, but Real Madrid ensured Manuel Neuer remained the busiest man on the pitch. Bayern finally broke the deadlock and silenced the Madridistas in the 41st minute via Diaz, before Harry Kane doubled the lead just seconds...

    Game of the Matchday

    Juventus 4–4 Borussia Dortmund

If you slept after watching just the first half of this match then I'm sure you are regretting it because Turin witnessed a game that felt more like a thriller than a football match. EIGHT goals were scored in the second half. Juventus equalized quickly each time after Dortmund took the lead for the first two times in the match. Two more Dortmund goals meant the visitors were comfortable at 4–2 deep into stoppage time, before Dušan Vlahović struck in the 90+4 minute, giving Juventus hope, and Llyod Kelly completed the turnaround in the 90+6 minute to secure an improbable draw. The final minutes captured everything that makes the Champions League extraordinary: tension, skill, timing, and sheer emotion.

    Biggest Surprise

    Benfica 2–3 Qarabag

I am a football fan I can honestly admit I did not know there was a team called Qarabag. Then to get to know they beat Benfica in their own backyard was shocking to say the least. Benfica were cruising 2–0 before the 20-minute mark and it seemed everything was going as expected, but Qarabag produced a stunning turnaround. Their finishing, composure, and tactical awareness shocked both the home fans and observers around the world. This result was a stark reminder that in the Champions League, even giants are never safe.

    Best Team Performance

    PSG 4–0 Atalanta

PSG carried their Champions League form from last season into this one as they were dominant from the first whistle. Kvaratskhelia consistently threatened Atalanta’s defence with his pace and dribbling, Marquinhos marshalled the backline with authority, and the midfield controlled the tempo with precision. The xG difference confirmed this dominance with the hosts' creating an xG of 3.48 compared to the visitors 0.55xG. It was the seamless combination of tactical discipline, collective understanding, and attacking flair that made this performance remarkable.

    Player of the Matchday

    Dušan Vlahović (Juventus)

Impacting the game as a substitute can be considered one of the more tricky and harder aspects of football. Which is why Vlahović, even with just 30 minutes of game time under his belt, should be proclaimed the Player of the Matchday. He came off the bench and completely altered the narrative. Scoring twice and assisting the equalizer, he turned a defeat into one of the most dramatic draws in the history of this competition. His composure and finishing under pressure showcased a player capable of changing the course of a match in moments that matter the most. The Old Lady's saviour!

Honorable mentions - Marcus Rashford (Barcelona), Harry Kane (Bayern) & Nuno Mendes (PSG)

    Moment of the Matchday

Juventus’ Stoppage-Time Turnaround (Vlahović 90+4 and Kelly 90+6)

Watch the late Kelly equalizer here

Two minutes that turned despair into ecstasy. Conceding a late penalty, it looked over for Juve as they trailed by 2 goals till the 94th minute. But from 4–2 down, Juventus produced a sequence of goals that captured the very essence of Champions League drama. The kind of drama that makes those late-night watches for us Indian and Asian viewers worth it.

    Late-Night Thoughts

How good does it feel to hear the Champions League anthem again! The one competition where the quality is always at an all time high. One moment, a team appears finished; the next, the narrative is flipped in a heartbeat. Last minute drama, giant-killings, banger goals, brilliant tactics, exciting matchups, CL has it all. For fans watching from India, the night becomes unforgettable not because of the time, but because of the moments that happen on the field which makes staying awake completely worthwhile. Football at this level is merciless, magical, and unforgettable.

Hugo Ekitike opened the scoring with a debut goal, before setting up Cody Gakpo soon after half-time. Antoine Semenyo fought back with 2 goals under 15 minutes. However, that was not all as Liverpool produced another magical night at Anfield as late goals from Federico Chiesa and Mohamed Salah made sure they started their season with a win. A midnight thriller that had us Indian fans wide awake and emotionally invested right till the end. Biggest Surprise Sunderland 3–0 West Ham Newly promoted Sunderland made a st...

The Hugo Ekitike derby. There was no shortage of subplots in this game and even without them, this game would have still lived up to the billing. But all that context made it inevitable for this section. When it looked like Newcastle would open the scoring, Ryan Gravenberch shot from distance and gave the Reds a valuable 1 goal lead out of nowhere. A former Evertonian in Anthony Gordon getting sent off against Liverpool set the stage. The contest looked over just after half-time when Liverpool made it 2-0 against the 10 men of Newcastle. But St. James' Park made up for Anthony Gordon, and the players respo...
