Champions League Quarter Finals 1st leg Recap (2025/26)

Full Results (Quarter Finals 1st leg) Real Madrid 1—2 Bayern  Sporting CP 0—1 Arsenal  Barcelona 0—2 Atletico Madrid PSG 2—0 Liverpool Game of the Matchday Real Madrid 1 –2 Bayern Since the final whistle at the Bernabeu, fans have hailed this tie as a "refreshing" exception from the recent norm. In an era where modern football, particularly in England, is often criticized for being too robotic and over-coached, this match felt like a throwback to the "classic" era, defined by a relentless, end-to-end rhythm. While Bayern appeared to be in the driver's seat, the numbers suggests a much tighter contest. The Bavarians were certainly guilty of wastefulness, with Luis Diaz and Dayot Upamecano spurning massive opportunities, but Real Madrid ensured Manuel Neuer remained the busiest man on the pitch. Bayern finally broke the deadlock and silenced the Madridistas in the 41st minute via Diaz, before Harry Kane doubled the lead just seconds...

    Game of the Matchday

    Leverkusen 2–7 PSG

No contest for this category. The game of the matchday was the chaotic 2-7 goal-fest. This match was the highest-scoring fixture of the entire round, producing nine goals, multiple penalties and one red card for each side. It was an open, frantic game where both teams threw caution to the wind, resulting in an attacking spectacle. PSG's star power was simply too much, running riot with goals from several of their star players. While the final score does indicate the game being very one-sided, the constant action, the flurry of goals, and the sheer entertainment value make this nine-goal thriller an instant classic.

    Biggest Surprise

    PSV 6–2 Napoli

The scoreline, in and of itself, is massive, but the surprise factor comes from the identity of the defeated side. Napoli, the reigning Serie A champions and a team with recent deep runs in the UCL, were expected to challenge strongly. However, after taking an early lead, they completely imploded, conceding six goals against a fired-up PSV. The Dutch side were relentless, and they put a gloss over the scoreline by scoring three goals in the final stretch of the match after Napoli went down to ten men, proving their attack is not one to take lightly and they are capable of humbling Europe's elite. This result throws a major wrench into the standings and puts immediate pressure on the Italian champions.

    Best Team Performance

    Arsenal 4–0 Atletico Madrid

While several teams delivered dominant results with massive scorelines, Arsenal's 4-0 victory over Atletico Madrid stands out as the single most impressive team performance of Matchday 3. The Gunners faced one of the most experienced and defensively feared teams in Europe, one renowned for building a stubborn block and frustrating even the most potent attacks. Even then, Arsenal dismantled Diego Simeone's side in a manner rarely witnessed against the Spanish giants. The final scoreline was the product of a devastating 13-minute spell in the second half where the floodgates opened, propelled by goals from Gabriel, Gabriel Martinelli, and a brace from Viktor Gyokeres. In a testament to their defensive control, the Gunners restricted Atletico to just one shot on target throughout the 90 minutes. The demolition of a powerhouse like Atletico Madrid, aided with their watertight defense that achieved a third successive clean sheet in the competition, demonstrates a level of strategic dominance and efficiency that makes Arsenal one of the favourites to win the Champions League this season. This could perhaps be seen as the passing of the torch from Simeone to Arteta, at least as far as the defensive formidability is concerned, as Atletico had scored in every game this season prior to facing his "master of the dark arts counterpart'.

    Player of the Matchday

    Dominik Szoboszlai (Liverpool)

The Hungarian heavyweight bags the award this matchday as he controlled the game, showcasing his impeccable work rate and technical quality. He was directly involved in twoof Liverpool's five goals, scoring one himself with a thunderous strike and providing one assist. His vision and creativity were key to breaking down the Frankfurt defense, allowing Liverpool to turn a tricky away fixture into a stunning blowout. Szoboszlai was the heartbeat and the creative catalyst of one of the matchday's most dominant results. Fans of the Reds could not emphasize it enough how badly this team needed a commanding victory like this with Liverpool enduring one of their worst spell of results in their history.

Honorable mentions - Guglielmo Vicario (Tottenham), Fermin Lopez (Barcelona) & Dennis Man (PSV)

    Moment of the Matchday

    Couhaib Driouech's Late Stunner

    Watch the stunning football here

This moment is not a late equalizer or a dramatic winner, this one's just pure footballing bliss. In the closing minutes of the PSV-Napoli clash, just after substitute Ricardo Pepi had scored with his first touch, PSV launched an immediate counter-attack. A rapid sequence of five consecutive one-touch passes carved through the depleted Napoli defense, culminating in Driouech unleashing a powerful, unstoppable strike from outside the box. This goal was the perfect final stamp to the shock scoreline. A display of sublime team-play, clinical precision, and flair. Moreover, moments like this reminds us fans why fell in love with the sport correctly called 'the beautiful game' in the first place. Delightful!

    Late-Night Thoughts

Three matchdays in, and one team from each of the top 5 leagues remain with perfect records. Don't know if this qualifies but the symmetry lover in me is having a blast. With 3 wins from 3 games they are; Arsenal from England, Bayern from Germany, Inter from Italy, PSG from France and of course Real Madrid from Spain. Five of the favourites to go ahead and win the entire competition with a couple more heavyweights like Barcelona, Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City also having a chance. Exciting times up ahead!

Hugo Ekitike opened the scoring with a debut goal, before setting up Cody Gakpo soon after half-time. Antoine Semenyo fought back with 2 goals under 15 minutes. However, that was not all as Liverpool produced another magical night at Anfield as late goals from Federico Chiesa and Mohamed Salah made sure they started their season with a win. A midnight thriller that had us Indian fans wide awake and emotionally invested right till the end. Biggest Surprise Sunderland 3–0 West Ham Newly promoted Sunderland made a st...

The Hugo Ekitike derby. There was no shortage of subplots in this game and even without them, this game would have still lived up to the billing. But all that context made it inevitable for this section. When it looked like Newcastle would open the scoring, Ryan Gravenberch shot from distance and gave the Reds a valuable 1 goal lead out of nowhere. A former Evertonian in Anthony Gordon getting sent off against Liverpool set the stage. The contest looked over just after half-time when Liverpool made it 2-0 against the 10 men of Newcastle. But St. James' Park made up for Anthony Gordon, and the players respo...

Club Brugge kept slicing Barcelona open with simple balls in behind and Carlos Forbs was unstoppable every time he got room to run, creating the first goal and scoring the second with a brilliant breakaway finish. Barcelona though, kept answering through Ferran Torres and later through Lamine Yamal, whose amazing run that equalised was the kind of moment that completely shifts the energy of a game. Eric Garcia even hit the crossbar...
