Champions League Quarter Finals 1st leg Recap (2025/26)

Full Results (Quarter Finals 1st leg) Real Madrid 1—2 Bayern  Sporting CP 0—1 Arsenal  Barcelona 0—2 Atletico Madrid PSG 2—0 Liverpool Game of the Matchday Real Madrid 1 –2 Bayern Since the final whistle at the Bernabeu, fans have hailed this tie as a "refreshing" exception from the recent norm. In an era where modern football, particularly in England, is often criticized for being too robotic and over-coached, this match felt like a throwback to the "classic" era, defined by a relentless, end-to-end rhythm. While Bayern appeared to be in the driver's seat, the numbers suggests a much tighter contest. The Bavarians were certainly guilty of wastefulness, with Luis Diaz and Dayot Upamecano spurning massive opportunities, but Real Madrid ensured Manuel Neuer remained the busiest man on the pitch. Bayern finally broke the deadlock and silenced the Madridistas in the 41st minute via Diaz, before Harry Kane doubled the lead just seconds...

    Game of the Matchday

    Club Brugge 3–3 Barcelona

This was pure chaos from minute one. Club Brugge kept slicing Barcelona open with simple balls in behind and Carlos Forbs was unstoppable every time he got room to run, creating the first goal and scoring the second with a brilliant breakaway finish. Barcelona though, kept answering through Ferran Torres and later through Lamine Yamal, whose amazing run that equalised was the kind of moment that completely shifts the energy of a game. Eric Garcia even hit the crossbar from distance amidst all this mayhem. Barca were again pushed back as Forbs scored again. The chaos didn't stop as VAR denied him a penalty, and Christos Tzolis accidentally scored in his own end. Brugge thought they had done it all as Romeo Vermant scored in added time but it was not to be for Belgian outfit as his goal was disallowed. Both teams outscored their xG and both looked capable of winning and losing this match at the same time!

    Biggest Surprise

    Qarabag 2–2 Chelsea

Chelsea dropping points against Qarabag was easily the biggest shock of Matchday 4 because nobody really expected Enzo Maresca’s side to get dragged into a scrap like this. They started well with Estevao’s composed finish, but the entire game flipped after a pair of mistakes from Jorrel Hato. Qarabag punished Chelsea with a rebound tap in and a confidently taken penalty. Even when Alejandro Garnacho came off the bench to level things after the restart, Chelsea never truly regained control. They kept the ball but did very little with it and ended up creating fewer big chances than their hosts. Qarabag had the better xG at 1.65 to Chelsea’s 1.08, although their penalty did skew the data a bit. Chelsea arrived expecting a routine win and instead found themselves hanging on in a match they were supposed to dominate from start to finish. In these two sides' previous two meetings, the scoreline read 10-0 to the Blues on aggregate, so to see this scoreline was surprising to say the least.

    Best Team Performance

    Tottenham 4–0 Copenhagen

Stealing the spotlight for pure team dominance was Tottenham Hotspur, who delivered a clinical 4-0 dismantling of Copenhagen which somehow became even more impressive after they went down to ten men. Brennan Johnson opened the scoring early and Wilson Odobert added the second, but the real twist came when VAR upgraded Johnson’s yellow into a red card. Normally this is the moment that Spurs become 'Spursy'. Instead, they treated it like a challenge. Micky Van de Ven scored an electrifying solo goal. Minutes later, Joao Palhinha capped off a blistering counter attack to make it four. They could've added another in the dying stages of the match but Richarlison hit his penalty kick into the crossbar. Spurs finished with an xG of 3.31 while Copenhagen managed only 0.33, which tells the entire story. Tottenham were in total control from the first minute to the last and turned a situation that usually leads to panic into a statement of superiority.

    Player of the Matchday

    Phil Foden (Manchester City)

In regards to Phil Foden, Pep Guardiola said "This season he's back" after the 4-1 win over Borussia Dortmund. There's no denying that. Although this season, he is playing a different role. He's seen more in deeper areas of his half and less on the wings which used to be where he played most. In this match he did it again, Foden repeatedly dropped into his own half to receive the ball, turn under pressure and carry City up the pitch, stitching attacks together with a level of control Dortmund simply could not disrupt. And when the moments of quality were needed, he produced them with those two stunning postage stamp finishes from outside the box that completely shifted the momentum of the match. At a time when Erling Haaland is doing the heavy lifting in terms of goal scoring, Foden stepping up with goals, creativity and ball progression made his influence unmatched this week, marking him as the clear best performer of the matchday.

Honorable mentions - Victor Osimhen (Galatasaray), Carlos Forbs (Club Brugge) & Thibaut Courtois (Real Madrid)

    Moment of the Matchday

Micky Van de Ven's amazing solo goal

Watch the stunning solo run here

Micky van de Ven produced the most unforgettable highlight of Matchday 4. A jaw dropping solo run starting from his own penalty area, running the entire pitch before smashing home the finish like a striker. In doing so, Van de Ven also broke the record for the longest ball carry ending in a goal in the history of the competition. His pace, balance, and confidence as he glided past challenges made the run feel almost surreal, especially given the context of the match. Not even 10 minutes had passed since his teammate Brennan Johnson was shown a red card. Teams are usually at their most vulnerable state in that sort of situation but Van de Ven turned vulnerability into a moment of defiance. There is hardly any other centre back in the world currently that has the ability to do what the Dutch defender did. It was the moment of the round because it blended raw athleticism with complete technical assurance, instantly becoming one of those rare Champions League clips that will be replayed long after the season ends. And it's not even the first time he's done something like this, let's also hope it's not the last!

    Late-Night Thoughts

Halfway through the league phase, and only 3 teams remain with perfect records. Arsenal from England, Bayern from Germany, Inter from Italy and the current Premier League leaders face them both in 2 of their next 3 Champions League matches. Their match with Bayern has match of the year potential because make no mistake about it, they are the two best teams on the planet right now. Matchday 5 can't come soon enough! Also, I am 100% sure Thibaut Courtois has some sort of vendetta against Liverpool.

However, that was not all as Liverpool produced another magical night at Anfield as late goals from Federico Chiesa and Mohamed Salah made sure they started their season with a win. The Hugo Ekitike derby. There was no shortage of subplots in this game and even without them, this game would have still lived up to the billing. But all that context made it inevitable for this section. When it looked like Newcastle would open the scoring, Ryan Gravenberch shot from distance and gave the Reds a valuable 1 goal lead out of nowhere. A former Evertonian in Anthony Gordon getting sent off against Liverpool set the stage. The contest looked over just after half-time when Liverpool made it 2-0 against the 10 men of Newcastle. But St. James' Park made up for Anthony Gordon, and the players respo...
