Champions League Quarter Finals 1st leg Recap (2025/26)

Full Results (Quarter Finals 1st leg) Real Madrid 1—2 Bayern  Sporting CP 0—1 Arsenal  Barcelona 0—2 Atletico Madrid PSG 2—0 Liverpool Game of the Matchday Real Madrid 1 –2 Bayern Since the final whistle at the Bernabeu, fans have hailed this tie as a "refreshing" exception from the recent norm. In an era where modern football, particularly in England, is often criticized for being too robotic and over-coached, this match felt like a throwback to the "classic" era, defined by a relentless, end-to-end rhythm. While Bayern appeared to be in the driver's seat, the numbers suggests a much tighter contest. The Bavarians were certainly guilty of wastefulness, with Luis Diaz and Dayot Upamecano spurning massive opportunities, but Real Madrid ensured Manuel Neuer remained the busiest man on the pitch. Bayern finally broke the deadlock and silenced the Madridistas in the 41st minute via Diaz, before Harry Kane doubled the lead just seconds...

    Game of the Matchday

    PSG 5–3 Tottenham

There were many entertaining matches spread across this matchday, but the pick of the bunch was between Paris Saint-Germain and Tottenham Hotspur, a goal-fest featuring 8 goals! This match was an absolute rollercoaster, with Spurs – who in the lead up to this match delivered what was maybe their most soulless performance in the North London Derby against Arsenal – leading twice only for PSG to fight back with force. Ultimately, the relentless nature of the Parisians, who refused to let the game slip away, resulted in a frantic 5-3 win. To give you some context on how ruthless both sides' finishing was, this match produced 8 goals from just 3.64xG. On display there were spectacular goals, individual brilliance, slick team moves, goals against parent club and also a stupid red card. The sheer volume of attacking football provided entertainment from start to finish.

    Biggest Surprise

    Liverpool 1–4 PSV

Where are Liverpool heading? It looks like teams are not afraid to go to Anfield all of a sudden, with the Reds losing the second consecutive match in their home ground in all competitions by a margin of 3 goals. It started with one of their senior players Virgil Van Dijk, playing basketball in his own 6 yard box. Ivan Perisic converted the penalty but when Dominik Szoboszlai pulled one back, it looked like that was the start of a comeback which Arne Slot desperately needed. As it turns out, that was not the case, as PSV were relentless, showing incredible patience and finishing. Instead of just sitting deep and being satisfied with one point, they created more big chances in the 2nd half than Liverpool, also while marginally generating better xG. This performance was an utter humiliation for the home side and a monumental victory for the Dutch club who are having fun while playing against the big teams this season.

    Best Team Performance

    Arsenal 3–1 Bayern

While the likes of Leverkusen, Chelsea and Dortmund were clinical, Arsenal's masterful 3-1 dismantling of Bayern Munich has to be the most impressive. Bayern had not lost a match even once prior to this match. And Arsenal had not conceded a single goal in their Champions League campaign. Both of these runs ended but the Gunners certainly the happier of the two. This was not merely a victory, it was a statement that established Arsenal's capabilities of killing European powerhouses. Facing one of the competition’s most decorated heavyweights, Arsenal executed a masterclass, pressing Bayern into errors and showcasing lethal finishing. This victory cemented the Gunners' status as the most in-form team in the league phase. The only team undefeated and the only team with a perfect record with 5 wins out of 5.

    Player of the Matchday

    Kylian Mbappe (Real Madrid)

Real Madrid came into their match against Olympiacos without a win in their last three matches and that pattern looked to continue as they started slowly and even went behind early. But then, their megastar Kylian Mbappe decided he had seen enough and took over the entire match by himself. All it took for him was seven minutes to completely turn the tide. Three goals in seven absurd minutes flipped the game on its head, each finish more clinical than the last, each run a reminder that nobody on the planet can live with him when he hits this gear. Olympiacos kept threatening, and even pulled Madrid back into danger, but the Frenchman kept dragging his team out of it, restoring the cushion with his fourth of the night. When he is in the mood — which, to his credit, is most of the time — he is simply unstoppable.

Honorable mentions - Vitinha (PSG), Nikita Haikin (Bodø/Glimt) & Charles De Ketelaere (Atalanta)

    Moment of the Matchday

Jose Gimenez scores at the death against Inter

    Watch Gimenez's header here

Inter, who came into the contest with a perfect record in the league phase, had battled their way back to draw level at 1-1 and seemed set to escape Madrid with a point but Atletico at home are a different beast. The Metropolitano was already simmering, and then from that late corner, Giménez rose above everyone and absolutely powered a header into the net. Bedlam! Simeone was celebrating like he had just won the trophy, the stadium went completely unhinged. Inter actually edged the xG and threw everything at Atleti in the second half, but when Atletico Madrid smells blood in their own stadium, logic goes out the window. A last-gasp winner, a perfect record snapped, and a crowd that lived every heartbeat of it, all in an instant.

    Late-Night Thoughts

5 Matchdays done and dusted and only team remain has a perfect record. Who's going to step up and stop the Gunners? They just look so determined to win every duel, every matchup, every match and every competition. They've had the quality to do so for some time now, all they needed was proper depth and backups and now they have that. Matchday 6 gives us perhaps, the clash of this era of football. Two teams who are not afraid to go toe-to-toe with each other. Bernabeu. Real Madrid. Manchester City. Can't wait!

Hugo Ekitike opened the scoring with a debut goal, before setting up Cody Gakpo soon after half-time. Antoine Semenyo fought back with 2 goals under 15 minutes. However, that was not all as Liverpool produced another magical night at Anfield as late goals from Federico Chiesa and Mohamed Salah made sure they started their season with a win. A midnight thriller that had us Indian fans wide awake and emotionally invested right till the end. Biggest Surprise Sunderland 3–0 West Ham Newly promoted Sunderland made a st...

The Hugo Ekitike derby. There was no shortage of subplots in this game and even without them, this game would have still lived up to the billing. But all that context made it inevitable for this section. When it looked like Newcastle would open the scoring, Ryan Gravenberch shot from distance and gave the Reds a valuable 1 goal lead out of nowhere. A former Evertonian in Anthony Gordon getting sent off against Liverpool set the stage. The contest looked over just after half-time when Liverpool made it 2-0 against the 10 men of Newcastle. But St. James' Park made up for Anthony Gordon, and the players respo...

Club Brugge kept slicing Barcelona open with simple balls in behind and Carlos Forbs was unstoppable every time he got room to run, creating the first goal and scoring the second with a brilliant breakaway finish. Barcelona though, kept answering through Ferran Torres and later through Lamine Yamal, whose amazing run that equalised was the kind of moment that completely shifts the energy of a game. Eric Garcia even hit the crossbar...
