Champions League Quarter Finals 1st leg Recap (2025/26)

Full Results (Quarter Finals 1st leg) Real Madrid 1—2 Bayern  Sporting CP 0—1 Arsenal  Barcelona 0—2 Atletico Madrid PSG 2—0 Liverpool Game of the Matchday Real Madrid 1 –2 Bayern Since the final whistle at the Bernabeu, fans have hailed this tie as a "refreshing" exception from the recent norm. In an era where modern football, particularly in England, is often criticized for being too robotic and over-coached, this match felt like a throwback to the "classic" era, defined by a relentless, end-to-end rhythm. While Bayern appeared to be in the driver's seat, the numbers suggests a much tighter contest. The Bavarians were certainly guilty of wastefulness, with Luis Diaz and Dayot Upamecano spurning massive opportunities, but Real Madrid ensured Manuel Neuer remained the busiest man on the pitch. Bayern finally broke the deadlock and silenced the Madridistas in the 41st minute via Diaz, before Harry Kane doubled the lead just seconds...

Game of the Matchday

Sunderland 3–2 Bournemouth

The Stadium of Light witnessed another full on rollercoaster where Sunderland dragged themselves from the dead to extend their unbeaten home run to 7 games, winning 4 of those. Bournemouth came flying out of the blocks and looked ready to cruise, going two up inside 15 minutes with Amine Adli’s early strike and a ridiculous 40 yard screamer from Tyler Adams that felt like a knockout punch. But as the theme has been this season at the Stadium of Light, Sunderland simply refused to give up. Enzo Le Fee dragged them back into the fightback by converting a penalty kick and the crowd woke up instantly. And from that moment the whole atmosphere shifted. Bertrand Traore scored his first goal of the season by smashing in the equaliser just after halftime. Then it was deja vu for the Black Cats from a couple of weeks back, as Brian Brobbey rose highest to bury a header from a corner and complete the comeback. Bournemouth kept pushing and even finished with the better xG, but Sunderland dug in through an intense scrappy stretch of stoppage time that included Lewis Cook being shown a red card. A classic 3-2 comeback story.

Biggest Surprise

Tottenham 1–2 Fulham

The biggest surprise of the matchday came at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, where a completely off-colour Spurs side were deservedly beaten by a Fulham team that had not won away all season. Tottenham were expected to respond after their derby horror-show, nobody saw them displaying another horrror-show this quickly, conceding twice inside six chaotic minutes as Kenny Tete punished their slow start and Vicario’s mistake handed Harry Wilson a gift. Fulham settled immediately into a compact shape and Spurs just never found any real rhythm. Even Kudus’ thunderous strike early in the second half felt more like a moment of individual quality, much like Richarlison's consolation in the North London Derby, than any sign of a comeback. The pressure is increasing for Thomas Frank.

Best Team Performance

Everton 1–4 Newcastle United

Newcastle United delivered the standout team performance of the matchday and their away from home travels with an uplifting 4-1 dismantling of Everton at Hill Dickinson Stadium. Thiaw scored the quickest goal of the season and from there the midfield trio of Lewis Miley, Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton dictated everything. By halftime the game was effectively over, with Miley and Nick Woltemade adding to the tally. Thiaw striked again after the break to seal a statement victory that finally ended their long wait for a Premier League win on the road. Everton did had their moments, including Alcaraz rattling the bar and Dewsbury-Hall's brilliance but the overall control, purpose and confidence Eddie Howe’s side showed made this a complete performance. The Magpies are eyeing for Champions League football again for next season, and dominant displays like this can surely help them achieve that.

Player of the Matchday

Malick Thiaw (Newcastle United)

Malick Thiaw delivered his most eye-catching performance in a Newcastle shirt against Everton. Newcastle’s 4-1 win at Hill Dickinson Stadium felt comfortable largely because Thiaw made it that way, stepping up with a rare brace from the centre back. His early header is the quickest goal of the season up to now, which is matchday 13, before adding another in the second half. Beyond the attacking insticnt he showed, Thiaw defended with dominance, read danger early, and helped massively to give Newcastle thier first away win of the season.

Honorable mentions - Bruno Fernandes (Manchester United), Igor Thiago (Brentford) & Phil Foden (Manchester City)

Moment of the Matchday

Phil Foden's stoppage time winner against Leeds United

Watch Foden's late winner here

A late Phil Foden match winner meant the message is sent to Thomas Tuchel reminding him of his quality. He decided he simply was not letting Manchester City walk away with anything less than three points. After City somehow managed to let a comfortable two goal lead slip and give all the momentum to a spirited Leeds side, the entire stadium felt on edge, with the Cityzens having the horror flashbacks of this same time of the season last year. Then came the moment. Foden created half a yard with the quick footwork he's known for and drilled a composed finish into the bottom corner. What looked like a complete collapse, instantly flipped into a important 3points. Clutch football, a moment of individual quality and mentality that was missing somewhere in the 24/25 season for Foden and City as a whole.

However, that was not all as Liverpool produced another magical night at Anfield as late goals from Federico Chiesa and Mohamed Salah made sure they started their season with a win. The Hugo Ekitike derby. There was no shortage of subplots in this game and even without them, this game would have still lived up to the billing. But all that context made it inevitable for this section. When it looked like Newcastle would open the scoring, Ryan Gravenberch shot from distance and gave the Reds a valuable 1 goal lead out of nowhere. A former Evertonian in Anthony Gordon getting sent off against Liverpool set the stage. The contest looked over just after half-time when Liverpool made it 2-0 against the 10 men of Newcastle. But St. James' Park made up for Anthony Gordon, and the players respo...

Club Brugge kept slicing Barcelona open with simple balls in behind and Carlos Forbs was unstoppable every time he got room to run, creating the first goal and scoring the second with a brilliant breakaway finish. Barcelona though, kept answering through Ferran Torres and later through Lamine Yamal, whose amazing run that equalised was the kind of moment that completely shifts the energy of a game. Eric Garcia even hit the crossbar...
