Biggest Surprise
Aston Villa 2–1 Arsenal
Arsenal lost. Even without any context of the score or the opposition, them losing is a big deal, they've just looked so unbeatable. After months of control and consistency, Aston Villa ended their 18-game long unbeaten streak. This wasn’t even a fluke, it was calculated pressure, belief, and patience that was rewarded through the very last kick of the game. Matty Cash struck first to set the tone, Leandro Trossard dragged Arsenal back into it, and for long spells in the second half it felt like the league leaders would do what they always do and find a way. Villa absorbed it all, missed chances through Ollie Watkins and then landed the knockout blow in the 95th minute when chaos broke loose in the box and Emiliano Buendía swept it home. Much has been said about Arsenal massively improving the overall quality of their squad, but with the benefit of hindsight of course, they missed the towering presence at the back of a Gabriel or a Saliba or even a Mosquera. One moment and suddenly Arsenal’s cushion at the top shrank while Villa Park erupted into title-race belief, somehow after the start to the season they had.
Best Team Performance
Wolves 1–4 Manchester United
Granted beating Wolves right now is not that impressive, it's still hard to ignore the numbers Manchester United produced in this match. 4.24 xG, 27 shots, 10 on target, 8 big chances and 4 goals. Bruno Fernandes set the tone early, Wolves briefly sparked into life through Jean-Ricner Bellegarde - Wolves' first goal since October - just before halftime, and for a moment it felt like the hosts might make a game of it. False alarm. They never did. United came out after the break with intent and never let Wolves breathe again, as Mason Mount and Bryan Mbeumo sliced through a defence that simply collapsed and has been collapsing all season. Fernandes’ late penalty was almost an afterthought in a performance defined by wave after wave of attacks, relentless pressing, and a staggering amount of chances. Something that the fans of the Red Devils will welcome with open arms.
Player of the Matchday
Bruno Fernandes (Manchester United)
Everything Manchester United did well at Molineux flowed through Bruno Fernandes. He scored early, created constantly, and made sure Wolves never settled. His scruffy opener dragged United ahead when the game was still awkward, his lobbed pass carved Wolves open for the third, and his late penalty merely put numbers on a performance that had already decided the contest. Simply Bruno at his best. He lead from the front in a display that felt like a captain reminding everyone exactly who runs the show when United click.
Honorable mentions - Rayan Cherki (Manchester City), Xavi Simmons (Tottenham) & Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall (Everton)
Moment of the Matchday
Emiliano Buendia strikes at the death against Arsenal
Watch Buendia's late winner here
With Arsenal pushing and Aston Villa hanging on, the game felt like it was drifting towards The Gunners claiming the three points again. Some Villa fans would have been satisfied by a stalemate. Then in the final minute of added time, Villa put Arsenal to the sword. Crosses, blocks, saves, shots, missed clearances, a crowded box, and Emiliano Buendia smashing home a winner with the final kick of the match. Villa Park exploded and roared, not because of a stalemate, but because of a statement. Despite their poor start to the season, never take them lightly. In that instant, Arsenal’s long unbeaten run of 18 matches ended, and Unai Emery’s side momentarily got up to 2nd in the table. This could prove to be one of the most important, crucial moment of the campaign for Aston Villa, Arsenal or Manchester City.
