Biggest Surprise
Arsenal 2–1 Wolves
Arsenal won, almost. Against a Wolves side rooted to the bottom and still searching for their first victory, this was supposed to be routine, a walk in the park. Instead, it turned into a one of the dullest displays Arsenal have put on recent times. The league leaders dominated the ball but barely laid a glove on Sam Johnstone until Declan Rice's shot from outside the box finally forced a save in the 68th minute. If you were to tell any Wolves fan that they were going to score 3 goals at the Emirates, they would have been absolutely pumped. Unfortunately for them, two of those three goals were at the wrong end. Arsenal needed help, as Bukayo Saka’s corner bounced in off Johnstone to break the deadlock. When Tolu Arokodare headed a dramatic 91st-minute equaliser, the Emirates collectively froze. Arsenal though, were rescued once more by fortune as Saka’s cross was put past his own net by Yerson Mosquera. Three points secured, yes but far from ideal.
Best Team Performance
Nottingham Forest 3–0 Tottenham
Nottingham Forest looked sharper, stronger, and far more purposeful than Tottenham, cruising to a 3–0 win that never felt in doubt. Ibrahim Sangare and Callum Hudson-Odoi were enjoying this outing as they both combined with one another three different times. Forest were clinical and dominant, almost showing signs of last season. Such was their defensive structure, and such was Tottenham's lack of creativity, that Thomas Frank's side could manage only shot on target, finishing with a miserable 0.37 xG, while Forest controlled both boxes and the tempo. Slight underdogs before kick-off, they played like anything but. This win makes it three consecutive wins against Spurs for the Tricky Trees.
Player of the Matchday
Ibrahim Sangare (Nottingham Forest)
No one could have expected this name popping up in this section at anytime during the season. Everything about Forest’s performance revolved around Ibrahim Sangare. He dominated midfield duels, snapped into challenges, and dictated transitions with ease. His contribution went well beyond control, though. After setting up two goals and toying with Spurs’ midfield all afternoon, Sangare crowned his display with a long-range banger that perfectly summed up his authority on the game. That was his second shot of the game with the first one hitting the post. A parting gift from Sangare before he leaves for AFCON to represent Ivory Coast.
Honorable mentions - Bruno Fernandes (Manchester United), Malo Gusto (Chelsea) & Harry Wilson (Fulham)
Moment of the Matchday
Brian Brobbey's late equaliser against Arsenal
Cheating a bit on this one as the 'moment' happened over the duration of 25 minutes. In a game overflowing with chaos, one short stretch at Old Trafford stood out. It is reasonably rare to see just one free-kick goal in a game, let alone two. Marcus Tavernier stepped up first, bending a gorgeous free-kick past an unsighted Altay Bayındır. Not long after, Bruno Fernandes answered with one of his own, whipping his set-piece into the postage stamp. Two flawless free-kicks, less than half an hour apart, in the middle of a match that had already gone completely off the rails. Sometimes football doesn’t need explaining, you just sit back and enjoy the quality on display.
