Game of the Matchday
Real Madrid 1–2 Manchester City
Biggest Surprise
Atalanta 2–1 Chelsea
Chelsea rolled into Italy with all the confidence of a billion-dollar squad, having demolished Barcelona in their previous Champions League match, but Gian Piero Gasperini’s Atalanta just didn't care about the price tags or the hype. They produced a masterclass in tactical discipline, completely neutralizing Chelsea's midfield and turning their attack into a group of frustrated spectators. Gianluca Scamacca and Charles De Ketelaere provided the clinical edge that Chelsea lacked, punishing defensive lapses with ruthless efficiency. Seeing a team with that much talent tumble down to 13th place in the standings is a massive shock, and it leaves the Blues staring down a potential playoff disaster just to keep their European season alive. Make no mistake about it, Atalanta is not an easy team to play against, but you would not be wrong to expect something more from the Club World Cup winners.
Best Team Performance
Club Brugge 0–3 Arsenal
Arsenal are operating on a completely different frequency right now, and the rest of Europe should genuinely be terrified. By dismantling Club Brugge 3-0, they became the only side in this massive 36-team league to hold a perfect 100% record, with 6 wins out of 6, which is insane when you consider the level of competition. Mikel Arteta showed some serious tactical flex by not including the likes of Bukayo Saka, Riccardo Calafiori and Eberechi Eze in starting line-up, yet the rhythm didn't drop for a single second, proving this squad is built for the long haul. Martin Zubimendi was the heartbeat of the side, making everything look so effortless. They aren't just winning games, they are suffocating teams with a level of control and technical arrogance that suggests the trophy might finally be heading to North London this year. Who is up for the challenge to stop this Gunners side?
Player of the Matchday
Noni Madueke (Arsenal)
Filling the shoes of Bukayo Saka in a Champions League night is a task that would make most players sweat, but Noni Madueke didn't just step up, he delivered the best performance of the matchday. His performance against Club Brugge was a mix of raw pace and technical brilliance that left defenders looking for a place to hide every time he touched the ball. That first goal was something straight out of a FIFA game, as he dribbled past 2 defenders on the wing before unleashing a rocket that flew in off the underside of the crossbar. It always looks better when the strike hits the crossbar and goes in doesn't it? He then added to that with the instincts of a striker, heading home from a Martin Zubimendi cross. If he keeps performing like this on a consistent basis, it will get harder and harder for Mikel Arteta to see him as just a depth option when he is out here producing Goal of the Season contenders.
Honorable mentions - Oscar Gloukh (Ajax), Jules Kounde (Barcelona) & Charles De Ketelaere (Atalanta)
Moment of the Matchday
Sonny returns home
Is it cheating if the Moment of the Matchday didn’t actually occur during the ninety minutes of play? You be the judge, but some scenes are so powerful they make the entire football world smile, and Heung-min Son’s homecoming was proof that pure class is recognized by fans of every club. Before Spurs cruised to a 3-0 win over Slavia Prague, the legend returned to North London for the first time since his record-breaking move to LAFC last August. Because his transfer was finalized while the team was mid-tour in Korea, the fans never got that essential final goodbye, making this ceremony feel incredibly heavy with ten years of history. Dressed in a gray long coat, the legendary former captain walked onto the pitch before kickoff to a deafening standing ovation that seemed like it would never end. The club honored him with a commemorative plaque and a massive new mural, but the highlight was Sonny taking the mic to tell the 60,000+ fans that "this place will forever be my home." It was a beautiful moment of closure that reminded everyone why we love this sport. Players move on, but a legacy built on genuine loyalty is something all football fans celebrate wholeheartedly.
Late-Night Thoughts
We are approaching the end of the league stages with only two matchdays now remaining. Still plenty to play for for numerous teams. And plenty of good matches for us Indian fans to stay up late at night to watch. Some tricky away ties for the likes of Arsenal, Dortmund, Atletico Madrid and Liverpool while also featuring some favourable home matches for the likes of Bayern and Chelsea Also, it's been a while since we had any kind of UCL action anyways, so bring it on!
