Biggest Surprise
Arsenal dropping points against both Brentford & Wolves
Due to cup matches, Arsenal had two matches this matchday. They entered the round knowing wins would massively stretch their lead at the top. Instead they collected two draws. First came a 1–1 result against Brentford where Arsenal led but conceded late from a scrappy set piece situation and were even lucky to come away with a point. That alone tightened the title picture. Then at Wolves they looked comfortable at 2–0 up through Bukayo Saka and Piero Hincapie. That comfort was thrown out the window when Hugo Bueno pulled one back. Then deep into stoppage time the equaliser arrived, officially credited to Tom Edozie, who on his debut, might have scored a title-deciding goal. Six possible points became two inside the same matchday window. Title contenders rarely afford that margin. Are Arsenal really doing it again?
Best Team Performance
Manchester City 3–0 Fulham
Player of the Matchday
Virgil Van Dijk (Liverpool)
Virgil van Dijk’s contribution carried weight beyond the scoreline. His header secured a 1–0 victory for Liverpool away at Sunderland. That goal ended Sunderland’s unbeaten home record in the league this season. They were the only side yet to lose at home before this fixture. Liverpool needed resilience in a tight contest and Van Dijk delivered both defensively and offensively. He won key aerial duels, made multiple clearances, organised the back line and then decided the match from a set piece. It was not a flashy display filled with highlight reel-worthy goal line clearances. It was authority in a high pressure environment. Breaking a home fortress is never routine. That is why he earns Player of the Matchday.
Honorable mentions - Jose Sa (Wolves), Cole Palmer (Chelsea) & James Hill (Bournemouth)
Moment of the Matchday
Tom Edozie scores a stoppage time equalizer against Arsenal on his debut
Arsenal were minutes away from leaving Molineux with three important points. The clock was winding down, Wolves were throwing bodies forward, and the game felt like it was slipping away from them. Then some costly miscommunication inside the Arsenal box changed everything. Wolves debutant Tom Edozie reacted quickest and smashed the ball home to make it 2–2. In that instant, Arsenal’s momentum in the title race took a brutal hit, while Wolves earned a point that had looked improbable at 2–0 down. Late goals always carry drama, but this one carried huge consequences at the top of the table. Timing defines moments in football, and moments decide titles. Ask Sergio Aguero. Ask Steven Gerrard. Ask Vincent Kompany. Ask John Stones. Ask Ilkay Gundogan. This moment arrived at the most damaging second possible for Mikel Arteta.
