Champions League Quarter Finals 1st leg Recap (2025/26)

Full Results (Quarter Finals 1st leg) Real Madrid 1—2 Bayern  Sporting CP 0—1 Arsenal  Barcelona 0—2 Atletico Madrid PSG 2—0 Liverpool Game of the Matchday Real Madrid 1 –2 Bayern Since the final whistle at the Bernabeu, fans have hailed this tie as a "refreshing" exception from the recent norm. In an era where modern football, particularly in England, is often criticized for being too robotic and over-coached, this match felt like a throwback to the "classic" era, defined by a relentless, end-to-end rhythm. While Bayern appeared to be in the driver's seat, the numbers suggests a much tighter contest. The Bavarians were certainly guilty of wastefulness, with Luis Diaz and Dayot Upamecano spurning massive opportunities, but Real Madrid ensured Manuel Neuer remained the busiest man on the pitch. Bayern finally broke the deadlock and silenced the Madridistas in the 41st minute via Diaz, before Harry Kane doubled the lead just seconds...

Game of the Matchday

Chelsea 2–2 Leeds

Chelsea vs Leeds was the best game that this matchday had to offer. had the game exactly where they wanted it. Joao Pedro opened the scoring and Cole Palmer converted from the spot to make it 2–0 13 minutes after the break. Leeds had barely threatened in open play. But then the momentum flipped midway in the 2nd half. A Moises Caicedo foul handed Lukas Nmecha a penalty and Leeds had belief. Noah Okafor capitalised on a defensive lapse to make it 2–2 despite Leeds registering only two shots on target all game. Chelsea created 3.65 xG to Leeds’ 1.35xG but that did not matter as the decisive image of the night came in stoppage time when Palmer missed a 0.78 xG chance from 2 yards out that would have sealed it. From dominance to dropped points in one swing.

Biggest Surprise

Arsenal dropping points against both Brentford & Wolves

Due to cup matches, Arsenal had two matches this matchday. They entered the round knowing wins would massively stretch their lead at the top. Instead they collected two draws. First came a 1–1 result against Brentford where Arsenal led but conceded late from a scrappy set piece situation and were even lucky to come away with a point. That alone tightened the title picture. Then at Wolves they looked comfortable at 2–0 up through Bukayo Saka and Piero Hincapie. That comfort was thrown out the window when Hugo Bueno pulled one back. Then deep into stoppage time the equaliser arrived, officially credited to Tom Edozie, who on his debut, might have scored a title-deciding goal. Six possible points became two inside the same matchday window. Title contenders rarely afford that margin. Are Arsenal really doing it again?

Best Team Performance

Manchester City 3–0 Fulham

While others stumbled, Manchester City were clinical. The 3–0 win over Fulham was built on control rather than the chaos that unfolded in the reverse fixture which ended 4–5 at Craven Cottage. The Cityzens restricted Fulham’s ability to transition and effectively killed the game at halftime. Their defensive line held firm and prevented sustained pressure. In attack they were efficient, converting their best openings without needing a flurry of chances. Their dominant first half afforded them the luxury of sitting back  in the second half. This was a complete team display across both phases of play. No panic moments. No late drama. In a week where Arsenal dropped points, City simply handled their business. This result means if Pep Guardiola's men go on another winning run, there is mathematically nothing the Gunners can do to stop stopping City from winning another Premier League title.

Player of the Matchday

Virgil Van Dijk (Liverpool)

Virgil van Dijk’s contribution carried weight beyond the scoreline. His header secured a 1–0 victory for Liverpool away at Sunderland. That goal ended Sunderland’s unbeaten home record in the league this season. They were the only side yet to lose at home before this fixture. Liverpool needed resilience in a tight contest and Van Dijk delivered both defensively and offensively. He won key aerial duels, made multiple clearances, organised the back line and then decided the match from a set piece. It was not a flashy display filled with highlight reel-worthy goal line clearances. It was authority in a high pressure environment. Breaking a home fortress is never routine. That is why he earns Player of the Matchday.

Honorable mentions - Jose Sa (Wolves), Cole Palmer (Chelsea) & James Hill (Bournemouth)

Moment of the Matchday

Tom Edozie scores a stoppage time equalizer against Arsenal on his debut

Watch Edozie's debut goal here

Arsenal were minutes away from leaving Molineux with three important points. The clock was winding down, Wolves were throwing bodies forward, and the game felt like it was slipping away from them. Then some costly miscommunication inside the Arsenal box changed everything. Wolves debutant Tom Edozie reacted quickest and smashed the ball home to make it 2–2. In that instant, Arsenal’s momentum in the title race took a brutal hit, while Wolves earned a point that had looked improbable at 2–0 down. Late goals always carry drama, but this one carried huge consequences at the top of the table. Timing defines moments in football, and moments decide titles. Ask Sergio Aguero. Ask Steven Gerrard. Ask Vincent Kompany. Ask John Stones. Ask Ilkay Gundogan. This moment arrived at the most damaging second possible for Mikel Arteta.

Hugo Ekitike opened the scoring with a debut goal, before setting up Cody Gakpo soon after half-time. Antoine Semenyo fought back with 2 goals under 15 minutes. However, that was not all as Liverpool produced another magical night at Anfield as late goals from Federico Chiesa and Mohamed Salah made sure they started their season with a win. A midnight thriller that had us Indian fans wide awake and emotionally invested right till the end. Biggest Surprise Sunderland 3–0 West Ham Newly promoted Sunderland made a st...

The Hugo Ekitike derby. There was no shortage of subplots in this game and even without them, this game would have still lived up to the billing. But all that context made it inevitable for this section. When it looked like Newcastle would open the scoring, Ryan Gravenberch shot from distance and gave the Reds a valuable 1 goal lead out of nowhere. A former Evertonian in Anthony Gordon getting sent off against Liverpool set the stage. The contest looked over just after half-time when Liverpool made it 2-0 against the 10 men of Newcastle. But St. James' Park made up for Anthony Gordon, and the players respo...

Club Brugge kept slicing Barcelona open with simple balls in behind and Carlos Forbs was unstoppable every time he got room to run, creating the first goal and scoring the second with a brilliant breakaway finish. Barcelona though, kept answering through Ferran Torres and later through Lamine Yamal, whose amazing run that equalised was the kind of moment that completely shifts the energy of a game. Eric Garcia even hit the crossbar...
